The Cloisters is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art located at Fort Tryon Park, overlooking the Hudson River.  Once you trek your way up the hillside, the architecture and gardens will transform your preconceived notions about metropolitan Manhattan; you feel like you've just arrived at a serene monastery.  The museum houses works of art such as tapestries, stained-glass windows, columns, sculptures, and paintings from medieval Europe, and gardens planted from horticultural information found in medieval poetry and garden documents.

Tip:  If you're planning on going to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, plan on going to The Cloisters the same day - one admission pays for both museums.
